Prof. Dr. Axel Sowa, RWTH Aachen University

Axel Sowa is professor for architectural theory at RWTH-Aachen University. His current research is focused on changes in the notion of mimesis, the question of imitation in modern contexts, and on the beginning of the industrial mass production of building components in the early 1800s.  From 2000 to 2007, Axel Sowa was editor-in-chief of the magazine L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui in Paris where he published more than fifty thematic issues on fundamental questions of architectural theory and practice. He contributed to numerous magazines such as Domus, Werk Bauen & Wohnen and Bauwelt and wrote books on buildings for the arts, notably the Friedrich-Christian-Flick-Collection in Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, and the Espace de l'Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux, France. Together with Susanne Schindler and Anne Kockelkorn, Axel Sowa is editor of Candide.

 

Prof. Bart Lootsma,  Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck

Bart Lootsma (born 1957 in Amsterdam, Netherlands) studied architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology during 1975-1984. He is a historian, critic, and curator in the fields of architecture, design, and fine arts. He holds the chair for architectural theory at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck and is also professor at the Institute for History, Theory and Critic in Architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna.

As head of research, Lootsma worked at the ETH Zurich and led research projects at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. He has also been appointed visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Additionally, he was director of the Department for 3D-Design at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design.

Lootsma also taught several courses in architecture, design, and fine arts at different academies of Art and Architecture in the Netherlands. He was editor for numerous journals such as Forum, ARCHIS, de Architect, and GAM and has acted as guest curator for ArchiLab 2004 in Orléans The Naked City and curator at the Schneider-Forberg Foundation in Munich. Lootsma’s work has appeared in many journals, such as DOMUS, Archplus, l'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui and A+U.

Prof. Dr. Gökçeçiçek Savaşır, Dokuz Eylül University

Architect. Graduated from the Middle East Technical University (M.E.T.U.), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, Ankara, Turkey (B.Arch. 2000). Received her M.Arch Degree, with the topic "Re-framing Architecture: METU Faculty of Architecture and its Photographic Reproduction”, in 2001, at the M.E.T.U. Received her Ph.D. Degree in 2008, at the same department with the topic “Re-thinking the Limits of Architecture through the Avant-Garde Formations during the 1960s: Projections and Receptions in the Context of Turkey”. Teaching as a Professor at Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey. Her fields of interest include “architectural history, theory and criticism”, “architectural avant-garde”, “architectural photography”, “visuality, and architectural representation”, "modernity and modern architecture", “tourism architecture”.

Prof. Dr. Gülsüm Baydar, Yasar University

Prof. Gülsüm Baydar received her Ph.D. degree in architectural history at the University of California, Berkeley.  She taught design, history and theory courses at universities in the US, Singapore, Australia and Turkey.  Her work lies at the intersections between architectural and other discourses including psychoanalytical, postcolonial and feminist theories in order to explore the boundaries of the architectural discipline.  Her articles appeared in such leading journals as Assemblage, Journal of Architectural Education, Society and Space, Signs, and Gender, Place and Culture.  She is the co-editor of Postcolonial Space(s) (Princeton Architectural Press, 1997) and Negotiating Domesticity (Routledge, 2005). 

 

Prof. Dr. Ömür Barkul, Yıldız Technical University

Ömür Barkul studied at Yildiz Technical University Faculty of Architecture. She received B.Arch. degree with the thesis on “Physical, social and structural problems of 19.century apartments in Istanbul”. Directed independently design studios at graduate and master programs at Yildiz Technical University Faculty of Architecture since 1993. And also gives lectures on “Contextual Architecture”, “Social Sustainability and Social Environment in Rehabilitation Areas”

 

Prof. Dr. Sengül Öymen Gür, Beykent University 

Dr. Gür, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, USA (Ph.D-1978) was the professor of Architectural Design and the head of Building Sciences in the Faculty of Architecture (KTU, Turkey). She is the head of Architecture Department, Beykent University, Istanbul. She chairs LIVENARCH (LIVable ENvironments and ARCHitecture) International Congresses in Architecture. Dr. Gür who is included in the Directory of Environment-Behavior-Design Researchers and is a member of several professional associations such as CICA (Comité International des Critiques d'Architecture), DRS, Turkish Chamber of Architects and WA and an intermittent member of IAPS, CIB W84, IAHS, Heritage, etc. She is the honorary member of BTI (Bund Türkischer Ingenieure und Akademiker e.V).

She has served as the editor of Mimarlık (the periodical of Turkish Chamber of Architects) between 1988 and 1992 and is presently the editor of the scientific periodical of the Anatolian University (Eskişehir, Turkey), editor in chief of the Educational Technology (İstanbul) and the regional editor of World Architecture. She is the reviewer of Megaron, Trakya Scientific Magazine, SANART, E-books, Scientific Research & Essays (www.academicjournals.org/SRE), JAABE, and Design Studies.

 

Patrick Weber, UCL, Storp-Weber-Architecture

Patrick Weber studied at the Weissenhof Art Academy in Stuttgart before finishing his education at the Bartlett School of Architecture with a Master’s in Architecture and Design. He is currently teaching at the Bartlett School of Architecture in the Degree and holds the position of Coordinator of Pedagogic Affairs overseeing all the taught programmes within the School of Architecture. His research interests are in the fields of ‘Adaptations of houses and home’. He is currently in the process of setting up a research centre for ‘Housing’ at UCL. He is the Co-founder of Storp Weber Architects based in London working on a series of private and public projects ranging from residential architecture and schools in both Germany and the UK.

Associate Professor Özen Eyüce, Bahçesehir University   

Özen Eyüce graduated from Middle East Technical University, Department of Architecture as B.Arch , she took her Ph.D. from 9 Eylül University. She founded her Architectural Office in 1989 and designed and constructed many buildings.  In 1994, she participated in the initiation of the Master program, in 1995 founded the Department of Architecture in Faculty of Architecture at Institute of Technology in İzmir with Prof. Ahmet Eyüce.

She participated in many projects and won the first Prize with the Aquarium Project. She has been working in Bahceşehir University since 2005. Her major fields of research are architectural design, architecture of public works and Architecture of İzmir. She has a book named Köprüler (Bridges) and numerous national and international publications.

 

Associate Professor Dr. Emine Görgül, Istanbul Technical University

Emine Görgül is an associate professor and vice-chair in Istanbul Technical University-ITU Department of Interior Architecture. She has received her B.Sc. (1999), M.Sc. (2002) and Ph.D. (2013) degrees from ITU on Architecture and Architectural Theory and Criticism.  Her master thesis has focused on Deconstructivism and Avant-Garde Theory, while dismantling the AG behavioral tone in Deconstructivism. Yet her Ph.D. thesis entitled ‘space as a becoming: a discussion on transfiguring ontology of space ad emergence of spatial mediators’ has also focused on the space as an open-ended dynamic embodiment, and examined the architectural space through a Deleuzian context.

She was a visiting scholar in DSD-TU Delft, a visiting teacher at Architectural Association-London and invited studio critic in Hong Kong University-School of Architecture, and invited professor in Auburn University-Alabama.  She has been the chair of ‘Deleuze Studies Conference Istanbul 2014’, and the founder of the ITU Deleuze Studies Reading Group-İstanbul. She has been also the  keynote presenters of III.Deleuze Studies Asia Conference-Manipal and 2014 Deleuze Conference in Lima. She experiments alternative ways of teaching design and creativity through her architectural and interior architectural studios at both under-graduate and graduate levels, and authors numerous articles both in Turkish and in English, on design theory and criticism as well as design education and innovative interventions.

 

Associate Professor Derya Elmalı Sen, Karadeniz Technical University

Derya Elmalı Şen, is an associate professor of Building Design and Theory at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, Trabzon.  She graduated from KTU Department of Architecture as B. Arch in 2001, where she received her M.Arch degree with the thesis entitled “Transparency-Opacity Concepts in Architecture and Their Effects on Perception of Façades” in 2005. She received her Ph.D. degree with the thesis entitled “A Research on Transparency and Opacity Concepts in the Context of Perception and Signification (Denotation/Connotation) in Architecture) (KTU, 2009). Her research interests are in the fields of architectural design, transparency in architecture, meaning in architecture, modern architecture and vernacular architecture.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Efe Duyan, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University

Poet, architect (b. 1981, İstanbul, Turkey). He studied architecture and philosophy in Middle East Technical University (B.A.), History and Theory of Architecture in Yıldız Technical University (M.S.) and History of Architecture in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (PhD). He is currently teaching history of architecture at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Some of his academic works as editor are House and Home, Politics and History of Architecture as Cause and Consequence, Urban Space and Literature, Creativity Autonomy and Function. His fields of interest are theory of architecture, modern architecture, 'critical architecture', 'undesigned spaces' and architectural texts. He has been invited to several international organizations including Word Express project, Edinburgh Book Festival, London book Fair, Berlin Poetry Festival and Lodeve Poetry Festival.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Elvan Gökçe Erkmen, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University

She was born in 1959 in Istanbul. She graduated from Istanbul German High School in 1978 and completed her graduate studies in Istanbul Fine Arts Academy in 1983. She wrote anthologies about people and movements in art and architecture history between 1984 and 1985. She started working as a Research Assistant in the Department of Architecture History in Mimar Sinan University in 1985. She received her Phd degree with her Phd thesis entitled 'Clemens Holzmeister and his place in Turkish Architecture'. (This thesis is still being exhibited at Salzburg Clemens Holzmeister Museum's publications section.)

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Ismet Osmanoglu, Trakya University

He was born in 1964. He holds a BA (1986) in Architecture from Istanbul Technical University, an MA (1990) in Engineering and Technology from Istanbul Technical University and a PhD (2004) in Engineering and Technology from Istanbul Technical University. His fields of interests are urban conservation and renovation; urban conservation policy; restoration; architectural design for the historic part of  urban areas; architectural and environmental  design / implementation. Asst Prof. Dr. Margarida Brito Alves, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Margarida Brito Alves holds a BA (2000) in Architecture from Universidade de Coimbra, an MA (2006) and a PhD (2011) in Contemporary Art History, both from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

She is the coordinator of the Contemporary Art Studies research line of the Instituto de História da Arte (http://iha.fcsh.unl.pt/).

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Nilay Ünsal Gülmez, Bahçesehir University  

Nilay Ünsal Gülmez is graduated from Middle East Technical University, Department of Architecture in 1997. She completed her graduate studies (MSc) (2000) and her PhD (2008) in Architectural Design at Istanbul Technical University.  She worked in architectural offices (Benart, MIG) in Istanbul between 1997 and 2003. Gülmez  joined academic staff of Bahçeşehir University, Faculty of Architecture and Design in 2005. She has been teaching architecture/interior architecture studios as well as design theory and urban housing courses since 2008. She is coordinating first year basic design/design studies studios in Interior Architecture and Environmental Planning Department. 

 

Asst. Professor Dr. Paola Ardizzola, Antalya International University

Paola Ardizzola, Italian, has a Ph.D in Architecture and Urban History got at G. D’Annunzio University, Pescara (Italy). She is assistant professor, founder (2013) and chair of the Department of Architecture at AIU/Antalya International University, Antalya (Turkey). She is the chief of MusAA-MuseumArchitettureArt, an institution founded in 2009 after the tragic events of the major earthquake in L’Aquila (Italy) for preserving the memory and culture of the local heritage. In 2010 she awarded the Bruno Zevi International Prize for an historical-critical essay on Architecture. 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Sophia Vyzoviti, University of Thessaly 

Sophia Vyzoviti received her PhD in design theory and methodology at Delft University of Technology. Prior to TUDelft, she completed her Master in Architecture at the Berlage Institute after earning a diploma in Architecture from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has taught architectural design at University of Cyprus, National University of Singapore and Delft University of Technology.  Her research focuses on design tool development integrating knowledge from social geography, culture studies, and artificial intelligence into the field of architecture. Sophia Vyzoviti is the author of three books on form-generation methods for architecture and product design: soft shells, supersurfaces and the best-selling folding architecture released by BIS Publishers Amsterdam.

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Suna Çagaptay, Bahçesehir University   

Suna Çağaptay is the assistant professor of architectural history and archaeology in the School of Architecture and Design at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. She earned her PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (2007) in medieval architectural history and theory, with a focus on the late Byzantine and early Ottoman periods. She earned her MA (2001) and BA (1998) in archaeology and history of art at Bilkent University, Ankara. Since the summer of 2009, she has been leading a GPR survey and cultural heritage management project that aims to reconstruct the early Ottoman as well as Byzantine and Late Antique urban strata in Bursa. Her work appeared in English and Turkish, focuses on the theme of frontier studies to offer a broader reading of religious and political transition as displayed in material culture in medieval Anatolia and the Mediterranean.

Dr. Susana Abreu, Universidade do Porto, Faculty of Architecture

Susana is an FCT post-doc fellow at CEAU, the research institute of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP). She trained as an architect (Licentiate, FAUP), and received both her M.Phil. and Ph.D. (2012) in Art History from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP). She is currently developing her own research project "Form and Meaning in Context: Portuguese architecture, 1481-1580” in three different research units: at the CEAU/ FAUP; the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto (IF / FLUP); and the Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) of the University of Leiden. The aim of this project is to study the Portuguese Renaissance architecture (1481-1580) in dialogue with the philosophy, literature, science and visual culture of that time. She published on Architecture History and Theory and has presented her work at national and international conferences. She is preparing a book manuscript on the epistemology of Architecture analyzing the reception of Vitruvius’ treatise during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Susana also served as President of the Portuguese Association of Art Historians – APHA (2005-2009).

Dr. Eng. Manfredi Saeli, University of Palermo

Manfredi Saeli, engineer and architect (Italian/EU certifications), is a scholar in “Architectural Technology” and “History of Constructive Technologies”. Laurea (BA+MS) in “Construction Engineering and Architecture” (2006), M.Sci in “Nanotechnology for Cultural Heritage” (2008), Ph.D. in “Construction Engineering” (2011), Post-doc in “Nanocomposite Materials” (2013-14). In 2013 he was awarded by the Italian Academic Society of Architectural Technology “Ar.Tec.” for Promotion in Research.
From 2008 he has been collaborating at the Department of Architecture (DARCH), Polytechnic School of the University of Palermo (Italy) where focuses his research on either historical architecture (knowledge, restoration, rehabilitation and reuse) and nanocomposite materials in construction (design, production, testing, high performance buildings). He is author of about 40 scientific publications reviewed in international scientific journals and presented in international and national conferences and has collaborated and spent time at University College London (UK) (2008-2009), Columbia University (USA) (2009-2010) and Universidade de Aveiro (PT) (2013-2014). 

In Italy he works as an engineer/architect and is a member of the Italian Institute of Professional Engineers (Section of Palermo), of the Architectural League of New York, and of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments. He is also accredited as Technical Consultant of the Law Court of Palermo and of the Office of the Peace Officers of Palermo.

Macarena de la Vega, PhD candidate at the University of Canberra 

Macarena de la Vega de Leon is an Architect and PhD in Architectural History. She is part of the Australian Research Council funded research project ‘Is Architecture Art? A history of categories, concepts and recent practices’ (Centre for Architecture Theory Criticism History) and teaches at The University of Queensland, School of Architecture. Her field of interest is the study of the writing of architectural history, its historiography, with a recent focus on the late 20th and early 21st centuries and the global. She serves as Communications Manager and committee member of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand (SAHANZ).
