Derya Oktay is currently a Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the Department of Architecture and the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Samsun, Turkey. Prior to her current position, she was the Director of the MS in Urban Design Programme and a professor at Eastern Mediterranean University, North Cyprus, and the Founding Director of the Urban Research & Development Center (URDC) at the same institution (1999-2013). In addition, she has served as the President of the Society for International Development (SID) Lefkosa Chapter in Cyprus. Dr. Oktay is a licensed architect and urban designer in Turkey, and trained at Gazi University, Middle East Technical University,  Oxford Brookes University, UK and Yildiz Technical University.

Her areas of research are sustainable urbanism and architecture, cultural-spatial aspects of cities  housing environments, urban identity, public urban spaces and liveability and quality of urban life, beside her main field of expertise urban design. She was a team member in various urban and architectural design projects and juries, and was a Visiting Scholar in such universities as UC Berkeley, Politecnico di Milano, University of Michigan, and Oxford Brookes University. She has experience in both qualitative and empirical research funded by the EU, USAID, TUBITAK, and EMU. She has authored more than 100 publications including books, chapters in refereed books, refereed journal articles, conference papers and popular press articles, and developed and offered courses. Professor Oktay’s academic experience includes teaching courses on architectural design in urban/local/different contexts, urban design, sustainable development, socio-cultural aspects of housing environments and public spaces. She is on the editorial board of various refereed journals, and the champion/editor of the two special issues of Urban Design and Planning journal on the themes of ‘Quality of Life in Cities’ and ‘Urban Identity in the Era of Globalisation’.

She was born in Isparta/Türkiye. She has completed her undergraduate, master and PH.D studies at Istanbul Technical University. She has been awarded by Foundation For Architecture – Turkey in 2005 and European Union (the Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards) in 2006 with her Ph.D. thesis. Her research interests are monument conservation, urban preservation, adaptive re-use and industrial heritage. She is currently head of the Department of Architecture at Gebze Technical University.

She has published many national and international manuscripts and books. She contributes design and conservation studios and also conducts many graduate and doctoral thesis. Adding value to historic environments as a part of living fabric is her educational philosophy. She is a member of organizations such as ICOMOS, DOCOMOMO and is a member of Kocaeli Cultural Assets Conservation Board.

Eti Akyüz Levi was born in İzmir. She graduated from Dokuz Eylul University Department of architecture. She graduated in 1993 from doctorate program of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Branch of Architecture at the same university. 

She obtained in 1995 the associate professor title and in 2001 the professor title. She has been working for Dokuz Eylul University as educational architect since 1986. In the period in question she performed administrative duties such as head of Department of Architecture, head of Restoration Program, membership of Faculty Committee, membership of Administration Board of the Faculty. 

Her specialization areas are historical environment conservation and evaluation, restoration, traditional housing architecture, rural architecture, İzmir city researches.

Aynur Can was born in Denizli in 1972. In 1996 she graduated from İstanbul University faculty of Political Sciences. She graduated from the master program in 1998 and she completed her doctorate degree in 2003, Marmara University, Institue of Social Sciences. Her research fields are city culture, urban aesthetics, urban regeneration, urban conservation and especially, Ottoman architectural culture. Now, she is an associate professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Marmara University.

She obtained her Ph.D. (2009) degree in Urban Design from Vienna University of Technology with dissertation titled “Complexity of Meanings in Urban Landscapes: between the imagined and the real” that she defended with distinction. She practiced landscape architecture and urban design in the Netherlands; involved in various research projects in Europe. She thought urban design and landscape architecture courses at I.T.U. (fall 2010) and at Ball State University, College of Architecture and Planning (2011-2012).

Her research and teaching interests mainly lie in the area of urban design, extending to the intersections of ‘history, theory and criticism of contemporary architecture, urbanism and landscape’, ‘public space, culture and semiotics’, ‘critical-radical design practices’, ‘ecological, social and cultural context in design’. Her recent studies have focused on the role of design/qualitative design research in the production of urban public spaces for social, cultural and ecological emancipation.

Dr. Goksen Capar is a full time faculty member at Water Management Institute of Ankara University, Turkey. She holds B.S. (1994), M.S. (1998) and Ph.D. (2005) degrees in Environmental Engineering. She graduated from the Middle East Technical University. She carried out post-graduate study at Chemical Engineering Department of Imperial College, London in UK (2004). Dr. Capar's research interests are water quality, membrane technology, water/wastewater treatment, water reuse and resource recovery from waste streams.

He was born in Sivas in 1974. He graduate from Gazi University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 1995. He obtained his MA degree in 2001 at Ankara University. He has a Ph. D. at Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences in 2007. Since 2008, he has been working as an Associate of Professor in the Department of Public Administration at Harran University. He is currently working on City Council, Urban Rent, Crime, Housing Problem, Planning and Crime against the City.

She is an associate professor in the City and Regional Planning Department of the Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey. She graduated from the City and Regional Planning Department of the Istanbul Technical University in 1998. She completed her master’s studies in the Geodetic and Geographic Information Technologies Department of the METU in 2002. She got her Ph.D. degree from the City and Regional Planning Department of the Gazi University in 2007.

She has attended several national and international congresses; summer schools and workshops related to ecological urban planning and geographic information systems. She has written more than 50 papers on sustainable urban design and ecological and smart urban planning, geographic information systems and information technologies. She worked as a researcher in many national and institutional projects. She has awards about sustainability and urban growth, sustainable tourism.

Zeynep Günay holds a bachelor degree in City and Regional Planning from METU (2001). Before attaining the title of PhD from ITU (2011), she was awarded diploma with commendation from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS Rotterdam, 2003), received her first MSc degree with a specialisation on urban conservation (ITU, 2004) and her second on regeneration studies (Cardiff University, 2007). She received the title of associate professor in 2013. Her major areas of interests are urban conservation and urban regeneration/renewal theories and policies.

Through her scholarly works, she questions the vicious relationship between conservation vs regeneration with reference to globalisation and neoliberal planning agenda; and she explores critical heritage studies including the conceptual framework based on identity, memory, heritage industry, heritageisation, inclusive conservation and right to the heritage. Apart from servicing as a visiting lecturer in various European universities such as Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar, Institut D'urbanisme de Grenoble and Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, she is teaching in Mundus Urbano master programmes including TU Darmstadt and Universitá degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata. She has several international and national research and implementation projects including Prizren Municipal Development Plan under the supervision of UN-Habitat (2012) and UNESCO supported Istanbul Historic Peninsula Conservation Project (2003), which was awarded a Medal in in European Union Prize for Culture Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2004. She is the member of ICOMOS Turkey and national delegate and bureau representative of ISoCaRP.

Ozan Hovardaoglu is Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning at Department of City and Regional Planning at Erciyes University. He was Head of the Department between 2011 and 2013 and Director of Regional Planning Program between 2011 and 2015. He joined the department in 2001 after holding his bachelor degree in City and Regional Planning from Dokuz Eylul University in 2000 and received his MSc Degree in City and Regional Planning from Dokuz Eylul University in 2002. After completing his Doctoral Dissertation on the Influences of Generational Conflicts on Regional Development Pathways in Middle East Technical University in 2009, he joined post-doctoral research atNiederrhein Institut für Regional- und Strukturforschung (NIERS) in Mönchengladbach,Germany in 2013 on the subject of “Regional Transfer Effects of Higher Education Institutions”. During his post-doctoral research, he wrote a chapter on “Regional Transfer by Design” co-authored with Seda Calisir-Hovardaoglu in the book titled “Higher Education Institutions and Regional Development” and published by Hochschule Niederrhein in 2015.

This chapter was based on his university campus planning experience titled “Master Plan and Strategic Spatial Plan of University Dzemal Bijedic of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina” prepared in 2012 by Ozan Hovardaoglu, Seda Calisir-Hovardaoglu and Fulya Sinacı. His latest researches focus on Regional Development with a particular emphasis on Rural Development in Turkey, Changing Urbanization in Turkey, and Strategic Spatial Planning.

Irem Ayhan Selcuk is an assistant professor of city and regional planning at Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey. She received her BCP, MCP, and PhD degrees in city and regional planning from Dokuz Eylul University. Her research interests include urban transportation, quantitative planning techniques, and preservation of cultural heritage.

Dr.-Ing. Sigrid Busch is a senior researcher and architect at the Institute of Urban Planning, University of Stuttgart, Germany. She studied at the HFT Stuttgart, the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris, the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Stuttgart. After completing her degree in Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Stuttgart in 2000, she worked in planning offices in Germany and the Netherlands. In 2013, she obtained her doctoral degree on the topic of “new forms of public-private cooperation for inner city masterplan processes”. Her research interests include local governance structures and the interplay of stakeholders from the private sector, civil society and the political-administrative level.

Timothy Moore is the director of architecture office SIBLING, based in Melbourne, Australia. He has taught at RMIT and The University of Melbourne in urban planning, architecture and interior design. He has worked at architecture offices in Melbourne, Amsterdam and Berlin, and as an editor for two influential architecture magazines, Volume and Architecture Australia. He is currently the editor of Future West, a publication about urbanism in Western Australia. Recently he has spoken at academic conferences in Sheffield, Istanbul, Christchurch and Sydney on temporary urbanism and long-term urban frameworks.

Dr. Wissam Mansour is an architect and a philosophy scholar. He is assistant professor at the Architecture Department - FAAD, Notre Dame University-Louaize. His main areas of expertise are Architectural Design, Architecture Theory and Urban sociology. His current research rethinks urban experience and its transformations by spatial and material flows, as well as the politics and the structures of such transformations, including those relevant to occupation nuances, mobility and spatial resistance.

She is an assistant professor in City and Regional Planning Deparment of Karadeniz Technical University, Trabzon, Turkey. She graduated from the Archicectural Department of Karadeniz Technical University in 2003. She holds M.S. (2006) and Ph. D. (2011) degrees in City and Regional Planning. She worked in The United Nations Joint Programme To Protect and Promote The Human Rights of Women and Girls-Women Friendly City (2005-2010). Dr. Yılmaz Bayram’s research interests are urban desing, urban planning, urban open space, gender, elderly.

Denver Hendricks is currently a lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. He is the course convenor for the Architecture Diploma Program and currently completing an additional master in Urban Studies at the University of Witwatersrand. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from University of Cape Town (2004) and two diplomas from the Cape Peninsula of Technology. He currently co-directs Urbansoup Architects and Urban Designers based in Johannesburg and is designing a large cross-border Transport Orientated Development for the City Of Johannesburg.

His research areas are urban governance, public projects, race, democracy and public space, which is folded into his architectural projects. The approach is to fold practice and research, which informs each other. In addition, diverse collaborations with photographers, artists, graphic designers, and fashion designers are used to create exciting cross-discipline projects.
